Professor McGonagall was sitting at her desk, grading a few appallingly awful essays by first years, trying to ignore what sounded like two people yelling at each other outside. However, the voices seemed to be getting closer and closer and it was getting harder and harder for her to concentrate on the essay.

“SHUT UP!” Professor McGonagall jumped, and splotches of ink fell onto the essay. Putting the quill down furiously, she waved her wand, removing the ink and stalked to the door, emerging to find Harry Potter and Peeves in the hallway.

“What on earth are you shouting about, Potter?” she snapped, perhaps more harshly than necessary out of announce. “Why aren’t you in class?”

“I’ve been sent to see you.” Professor McGonagall narrowed her eyes. This didn’t sound good and she thought she had a good idea about just who sent him.

“Sent? What do you mean, sent?” she said suspiciously, eyeing Harry angrily.

With a look of defiance, he passed her a note written on frilly pink paper. Waving her wand in disgust to open the letter, she became angrier and angrier as she read the note from Professor Umbridge in which she explained that Harry had stepped out of line, in what she thought was her sweetest voice.

“Come in here, Potter.” she said as she stormed back into her office. The boy needed to understand things. When he was in the office, she rounded on him. “Is this true?”

“Is what true?” Perhaps seeing the flash in McGonagall’s eyes at his tone, he quickly added “Professor?” in an attempt to be more polite.

“Is it true that you shouted at Professor Umbridge?”

“Yes.”

“You called her a liar?”

“Yes.”

“You told her He Who Must Not Be Named is back?”

“Yes.”

Frowning, McGonagall sat down behind her desk. She had to admire his ability stand up to anyone, but feared he didn’t completely understand the situation.

“Have a biscuit, Potter.”

“Have—what?”

The look on his face would have been funny if it weren’t for the seriousness of the situation.

“Have a biscuit. And sit down.” she repeated gesturing to the chair and placing the biscuits, which were quite good, down in front of him. Putting the note down as far away from her on the desk as possible, she looked at Harry.

“Potter, you need to be careful” she said, anxiously trying to get the message to him without having to speak too plainly. You could never be sure who was listening. “Misbehavior in Dolores Umbridge’s class could cost you much more than house points and a detention.”

“What do you--?”

“Potter, use your common sense,” she snapped, growing angry at his inability to understand. “You know where comes from, you must know to whom she is reporting.”

The bell rang, but she remained where she was. “It says here she’s given you detention every evening this week, starting tomorrow,” she said, glancing at the note again in disgust.

Harry looked horrified as he protest against it. As much as she hated to admit it, Umbridge was still his teacher, and perhaps it was better to let Umbridge think she had the upper hand.

“She is your teacher and has every right to give you detention. You will go to her room at five o’clock tomorrow for the first one. Just remember: tread carefully around Dolores Umbridge,” attempting, once again, to convince him of the danger which he obviously was not understand, despite how sharp he usually was.

“But I was telling the truth! Voldemort is back—“ McGonagall winced at the use of his name and had to straighten her glasses as they’d fallen off. Angry at her own response she said, “Do you really think this about truth or lies? It’s about keeping your head down and your temper under control!”

She stood up, glaring down at him. She must make him understand. Harry stood up angrily.

“Have another biscuit,” she said, thrusting the tin at him.

“No, thanks.” Harry said coldy.

“Don’t be ridiculous,” she snapped, still angry at him. He took one reluctantly.

Curious as to how he could not be aware of the situation before this she asked if he had listened to Dolores’ speech at the welcome feast.

“Yeah,” said Harry. “Yeah…she said…progress will be prohibited or…well, it meant that…that the Ministry of Magic is trying to interfere at Hogwarts.”

McGonagall stared at him trying to remember something he’d obviously been too busy spacing out to listen to. She eyed him, then sniffed and held the door open to him.

“Well, I’m glad you listen to Hermione Granger at any rate,” she said, thankful he had someone with an even temper to rely on. She pointed him out of her office, and returned to her seat, contemplating what was to be done about Dolores Umbridge.
